The SoM open space planning responds to its particular position in the larger SUMC and campus context through a ‘field’ approach. The open space field provides the greatest degree of flexibility for current and future address/identity, connections and programming. The open space planning principles are therefore organized into categories of identity, connections, and programming. The LKC open space field accepts a wide array of circulation patterns including connections south to the campus along Via Ortega Mall, east-west along the new SoM Mall, north to the SUMC Quad and hospitals, as well as interstitial between SoM buildings. Located at the crossroads between academic learning and medical practice, the LKC building and open space field offers a rich setting for collaboration and gathering.
