UC BERKELEY BOALT HALL SCHOOL OF LAW

BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA

The Hargreaves Associates design with Ratcliff Architecture for the UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law envisions a major addition in the south-facing courtyard which displaces existing open space. The new addition houses efficient library stack space and medium and large size classrooms in two below-grade levels, and a large classroom with flanking informal student interaction spaces above grade. Hargreaves Associates provided resources to restore the west terrace and enhance the west entry to improve the public image of the Law School. This also allowed the School to contribute to the improvement of an important open space, the College Avenue plaza. The new site creates a plaza and terrace at the main entrance to serve as a casual gathering place for its students and faculty. The plaza and terrace is distinguished as a place by design treatment with paving, lighting, furnishings, and provides direct access for persons with special mobility needs. Roof terraces accommodate passive and active solar energy devices and green roof structures integral to the architecture.
