UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI - CLIFTON ARC

CINCINNATI, OHIO

Clifton Arc is the historic front door to the “University on the Hill” along Clifton Avenue. The project comprises 15 acres of lawn under a canopy of mature elms, maples, ash, and other species. Hargreaves Associates is working with the University of Cincinnati to create better connections from Stratford Heights to University Plaza and from the Gatehouse entering or exiting campus. Another impetus for the project is safety during the day (pedestrian and vehicular circulation improvements) and night (improved lighting and personal security). The project also includes the creation of the Promontory, an earthen landform that accommodates the flow of pedestrians into University Plaza and provides a place to pause and gather with friends while enjoying the view from within the Clifton Arc landscape. The existing Gatehouse at the beginning of McMicken Circle will be replaced by the new “Lantern Gate” designed by Vincent James Architects.
