UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH BUILDING
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN
The University of Michigan Science Research Building extends the architectural geometry of the building into its surrounding landscape. A zinc-clad Auditorium emerges from The Grove: a loose grid of Asian white birch, situated on top of the Vivarium. The Grove forms an intermediate landscape visually separating the auditorium from the glass “ribbon”, a new building designed by the Polshek Partnership, which provides a backdrop to The Grove. This layering of space and integration of landscape and building components works to provide depth of space for a large building on a small site.
