Cupertino Civic Center Plaza
Cupertino, California
The Cupertino Civic Center Plaza, contiguous to the new Cupertino Public Library and Community Hall designed by SMWM, accommodates pedestrian connections among the civic institutions while stimulating new open space programs for each of its adjacent civic institutions. Biaxial in design, the new plaza is divided by the pedestrian crossings between buildings into four distinct programmatic zones: lawn, native orchard, performance terraces, and civic fountains. The shade of the native orchard and the playful splashing of the fountains provide visitors with an escape from the midday heat, and the lawn and terraces set the stage for community programs and activities.
