Los Angeles Federal Courthouse Competition

Los Angeles, California

Hargreaves Associates, in collaboration with SOM and Craig Hartman developed a scheme for the Los Angeles Federal Courthouse Design Competition. Based upon balance as a design strategy, the narrow 11-story limestone rectangular form is balanced with a monumental open, glass-enclosed entrance space. The glass curtain creates airy, light-filled corridors and open areas. Within this entrance space is a large garden courtyard with water elements. A pool runs the full length of the building creating a distinction between public and judicial spaces as well as providing natural cooling for the area. The water offers a visual respite for visitors and employees, and serves as a powerful cross-cultural symbol of redemption.
