BRIGHTWATER WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITY
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
This degraded 114-acre site north of Seattle is transformed into a visually dynamic reforested water treatment landscape. A wastewater treatment facility (by Mithun architects and CH2MHill engineers), a stormwater collection and treatment system of canals and wetlands, and natural wetland habitats are nestled within a distinctive terraced and rolling landscape. Articulated by a diversity of native tree and understory plantings, the sculpted landscape unifies the site and reduces the scale of the wastewater treatment infrastructure. An extensive path system traverses the site leading visitors though secure process and public education facilities, forest patches, tree stands, faceted landforms, and wetlands to reveal water-cleansing processes. Collectively, the site’s water treatment features enhance and protect the local and regional watershed and Puget Sound.
