Guadalupe Gardens

San Jose, California

This four-acre courtyard garden adjacent to Guadalupe River Park is the first to be built in a network of public gardens totaling over 200 acres near downtown San Jose. On land that was once residential, now reclaimed for public use because it falls within the landing zone of the San Jose Airport, the project balances the growing need for parks within the city with sensitivity to limited water supplies by relying on drought-tolerant plants. San Jose’s rich agricultural heritage, as well as natural phenomena unique to the region, is reflected metaphorically in the design of the courtyard garden.
