Hunters Point Shipyard Waterfront Park

San Francisco, California

Through an extensive consensus based community design process, Hargreaves Associates has developed planning/design proposals for this contaminated waterfront, and decommissioned Naval Shipyard in South San Francisco. Integrating community desires with contentious issues of site contamination and a need for habitat restoration, the project resulted in four alternative concept plans, ranging from 60 to 160 acres. The 160-acre scheme provides a festival space with a large military crane as a focal point, an industrial sculpture garden that integrates sustainable energy generation with athletic fields, a shore-edge recreational trail that links with a regional trail system, and a 20-acre wetland habitat. The wetland habitat replaces a 20-acre industrial landfill with combined dedicated wildlife areas and passive recreation, trails, bird blinds, and a nature education center. It is adjacent to a newly restored shore edge, salt marshes, and bird habitat.
