SYDNEY OLYMPICS 2000 — OLYMPIC PLAZA
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
The Olympic Plaza is the heart of Homebush Bay and welcomed visitors, athletes and the worldwide audiences who watched the 2000 Olympic Summer Games. The plaza creates a common ground for the major venues of the site and has become Australia’s largest meeting place, measuring 9.5 hectares (23.47 acres) and accommodating crowds of more than 300,000. The bold backgammon pattern of red and ochre colored paving recalls the colors of the vast Australian landscape and unites the patterns of the site’s historic abattoir past with the new developments that will provide a legacy for Sydney’s future.
