SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPICS —PUBLIC ART
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Central to the concept of the Master Concept Design for the Public Domain at Homebush Bay was a thoroughly integrated Public Art Program. Intended to nurture the realm of Public Art in Australia, the Public Art Master Plan mandated public art projects as key components to all of the open space and building venue projects of the 2000 Olympics. The artists worked closely with the Hargreaves Associates team throughout the design process to insure that the creations were all truly site specific and in harmony, both conceptually and physically, with the landscape architecture and Urban Design of the site.
Fig Grove: Paul Carter/Ruark Lewis ”Relay” -- An interactive prose poem, engraved into the granite that references the unique Australian experiences of the entire history of the Olympics.
Northern Water Feature Pier: Ari Purhonen ”Osmosis” -- A painted aluminum sculpture integrated into the floor of Haslam’s Pier that refers to the cleansing processes of the water system of Homebush bay taking place in the marshes.
Southern Terminus: Janet Laurence ”In the Shadows” -- An evocative sculpture built into the creek along the site’s southern boundary that symbolically represents the natural chemical processes taking place in the waters of the site.
Urban Forest: David Chesworth & Sonia Leiber ”5000 Calls” -- A dramatic sound sculpture built into the Urban Forest surrounding stadium Australia that is composed of the sounds of human effort and excellence.
Haslam’s Creek Bridge Gateway: James Carpenter ”Luminous Thresholds” -- A gate way into the urban core made up of captured sunlight drawing on banks of fog in the sky.
