Crissy Field's 10th Anniversary

San Francisco, California

The conversion of the U.S. Sixth Army’s military installation at the Presidio into a national park encompasses the restoration and rehabilitation of the natural landscape of wetlands and dune fields along the San Francisco Bay waterfront.

With the removal of 70 acres of asphalt and concrete and nearly 90,000 tons of hazardous material and the planting by hand of 130,000 plugs of salt grass, a habitat that had not existed in the Presidio for more than a century has been returned. Crissy Field integrates a diversity of recreational uses with a vigorous and dynamic environment, all within the context of an enduring historical landmark.

The park is extensively used, beyond any local expectations, and is beloved as an icon of San Francisco its residents and visitors. Whether used for individual recreation and reflection, family reunions, or large special events the park retains its dramatic refection of history, culture, and its environmental setting.
