San Luis Rey River Park

San Diego, California

Hargreaves Associates was engaged by the County of San Diego to establish a vision for the 8–mile, 6000-acre San Luis Rey River Park Master Plan. The plan for this regional park balances the needs of active and passive recreation, habitat restoration, and cultural/environmental education. The river’s rich riparian habitat within the 100-Year Flood Plain provides critical habitat for several of the regions threatened and endangered species. Passive recreational programming included trails, picnic areas, bird-watching platforms, didactic habitat gardens restoration areas, and interpretative low-sensitivity archeological sites. The San Luis Rey River Park will satisfy the diverse recreational needs of the densifying region, while preserving and interpreting critical components of San Diego’s cultural and natural resources.
