The Governor Nicholls Wharf project transforms a critical stretch of New Orleans’ industrial riverfront into a dynamic public green space. The heart of the park includes plazas and expansive lawns that anchor the area with community-oriented programming including the adaptive reuse of the wharf structure as a Cultural Shed. Play areas, inspired by marsh creatures, engage children in learning about the surrounding landscape, wetland ecosystems, and their crucial role in river health. The planting includes a rich landscape of trees, native grasses, and pollinator-friendly plants. A continuous promenade creates a linear river edge experience and shaded pavilions further invite relaxation and connection. This project reclaims a historically private industrial site, celebrating New Orleans’ heritage through ecology, education, and inclusive public access.
