University of Chicago Logan Center for the Arts
Chicago, Illinois

The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, designed with architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, is a new multidisciplinary arts center at the University of Chicago. The design of both the building and landscape integrates classroom, performance, and exhibition spaces to create a dynamic collaborative environment for arts and scholarship.

The landscape is a series of garden rooms – courtyard, terrace, garden, lawn, and meadow – that extend off the building. Each room contains a single row or allee of trees. A distinct species is selected for each room, enhancing the individual character of each space as well as contributing to the campus as botanic garden. The highly visible green roof is planted with numerous bands of ornamental grasses recalling the Midwestern prairie landscape. Permeable pavers are used throughout the project allowing the creation of level, highly flexible outdoor spaces, eliminating surface drains, and letting storm water permeate directly into the ground.
