Hunters Point Waterfront Park
San Francisco, CA

Through an extensive, consensus-based community design process, Hargreaves Associates developed planning and design proposals for this contaminated waterfront and decommissioned Naval Shipyard in South San Francisco. Integrating community desires with contentious issues of site contamination and a need for habitat restoration, the project resulted in four alternative concept plans, ranging from 60 to 160 acres. The 160-acre scheme provides a festival space with a large military crane as a focal point, an industrial sculpture garden that integrates sustainable energy generation with athletic fields, a shore-edge recreational trail that links with a regional trail system, and a 20-acre wetland habitat. The wetland habitat replaces a 20-acre industrial landfill with combined dedicated wildlife areas and passive recreation, trails, bird blinds, and a nature education center – all adjacent to a newly restored shore edge, salt marshes, and bird habitat.
