Located in the International University Cultural Exchange Complex, a land-filled area of Tokyo Bay, the National Museum, by architects Nikken Sekkei Ltd, sits on a 5-hectare site designed by Hargreaves Associates that connects to the urban surrounding and provides a unique public space.

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation is a cultural facility that exhibits and displays innovations and paradigms in science and technology.  An urban plaza forms the frontal piece to the museum where sculptural landforms set partially in water express the collision and fusion of molecules while recalling the formal expressions of traditional Japanese Zen gardens.  The exhibition area that extends from the opposite side of the museum is framed by undulating landforms expressive of the light, sound, and electronic waves studied in technological and scientific research. This garden creates space for receptions and respite amidst changing exhibitions.
