I-395 Underdeck
Miami, FL

Woven between established and emerging neighborhoods, the Underdeck is a 33-acre public open space located below the reconstruction of I-395 in the heart of Miami.  The Underdeck forms a singular and unifying landscape that reconnects and revitalizes all adjacent neighborhoods, stretching 1 mile from Gibson Park in Overtown, over the FEC rail tracks, to Miami’s premier cultural institutions on Biscayne Bay.

The project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to re-stitch neighborhoods that were historically divided by the original I-395 construction in the 1960s, transforming an infrastructure of division into a place that brings communities together.  The Underdeck is a ribbon of green, offering a resilient and flexible framework of dense understory and broad canopy plantings, forming a surprising and revelatory destination, woven beneath and between Miami’s bustling transportation systems. This landscape framework adjusts in scale and programming in response to adjacent neighborhoods – offering multiple distinct yet overlapping ‘character zones’ along the mile-long open space.  Taking advantage of the striations of light and shadow created by the bridges above, the design incorporates amenities that range from play and performance to dramatic water interactive features, active plazas, and expansive urban gardens.
