JFK Plaza LOVE Park
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In the heart of Center City Philadelphia, JFK LOVE Park is an iconic destination and the most photographed view in the city – the Love sculpture by Robert Indiana framing the prominent jet of water on the historic diagonal axis of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The redesign of the park celebrates this prominent civic location, while providing a place that is welcoming and accessible as a day-to-day respite within the bustling city and that hosts seasonal festivals and events.

Overcoming complex below-grade technical constraints, the new plaza improves connections along the park edges, integrates public art, features a monumental jet of water within an elliptical plaza surrounded by low interactive sprays and generous lawn and planted areas.

A 200-foot long curved solid granite seatwall folds up from the plaza, creating an edge to the lawn and specimen trees. Perennial plantings in rain gardens manage the roof runoff from a new glass enclosed elevator headhouse that provides access to the parking structure below the park.  Restoration of the mid-century Welcome Center by Kieran Timberlake architects transforms it into a café, providing an active hub within the park.   The new park respects the historic diagonal of the parkway while providing a diversity of experiences within a contemporary design that creates an active platform for the life of the city.
